Crawford cruises past De Leon 41-14
                Sam Waller , Abilene Reporter-News

GLEN ROSE-"The De Leon Bearcats put together two very good quarters Friday against the Crawford Pirates.

The Pirates had the answer each time, though, bouncing back to take a 41-14 victory in a Class 2A Division I state quarterfinal playoff at Tiger Stadium.

De Leon got two quick defensive stops and a big play touchdown to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, then scored the only TD of the third quarter after both teams lost turnovers on their first possession of the second half.

Crawford responded with four touchdowns in the second quarter to take control, then stopped De Leon's comeback bid with two unanswered scores in the fourth. The Pirates converted two of De Leon's three turnovers into touchdowns.

The loss, De Leon's second of the season to District 7-2A Division I rival Crawford, ended ended the Bearcats' season at 11-3.

"I'm so proud of this team," De Leon coach David Yeager said. "We had a great year. I told them that unless you win the last one, you're always going to have that taste of defeat in your mouth whether it be Week 10 or Week 14 or Week 15.

"Hats off to Crawford, first and foremost. That's an outstanding football team. They made more plays tonight than us. Sometimes you meet a better opponent, but I'm super proud of our kids' effort. They played hard with class all year long. I'm really proud of our seniors for setting the foundation and I'm looking forward to next year."

Crawford's Garrett Dutchsmann rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Gage Pearson passed for 127 yards and two scores as the Pirates (13-1) advanced the the state semifinals.

Crawford will meet the winner of Saturday's quarterfinal game between Anson and Abernathy at a time, date and site to be determined.

"Playing in December is always special," Crawford coach Delbert Kelm said. "The later you go, the better it is. We've been to this round before. We just want to try to keep rolling, keep taking care of business."

De Leon actually outgained Crawford in total yards, 319-300, but the Pirates took advantage of Bearcats turnovers for scoring drives of 34 and 36 yards.

Bearcats quarterback Kevin Yeager, who missed the district game with Crawford because of injury, completed 17 of 24 passes for 206 yards and two TDs. Chris Fox added 59 yards rushing on 11 carries for De Leon.

The Bearcats got the start they needed, forcing Crawford to punt on its first two series. The second punt, a 66-harder by Coalson Foss, was downed at the De Leon 1-yard line, but the Bearcats picked up a first down before Kevin Yeager hit Orson Sylva for an 88-yard touchdown.

Sylva finished with two catches for 99 yards and rushed five times for 23 yards.

Kelm said the Pirates' ability to not panic after the rough start was a key factor in coming back.

"I'm not the most patient man in the world, but this bunch plays hard," he said. "They're a real tight-knit group. We had a blown coverage and gave up the long pass, which we'd talked about not doing, but you've got to give De Leon credit. Their kids played hard.

"Our guys stayed the course. They knew it was going to be a 48-minute game and didn't get rattled, just stayed with our game plan."

The Pirates righted the ship with a 10-play, 54-yard drive capped by Noah Bleything's 1-yard plunge on fourth-and-goal from the 1 on the first play of the second quarter. Three plays later, Kolby Smith came up with a De Leon fumble to set up an 8-yard TD pass from Pearson to Lucas Steinkamp, putting Crawford ahead to stay with 8:12 to go in the half.

Crawford then forced De Leon to punt on its next two possessions and drove for touchdowns each time. Dillan Daniel's 9-yard run made it 21-7 and Pearson's 24-yard pass to Jeff Ward put the Pirates up 28-7 with 1:21 to go in the half.

Ward finished with four receptions for 80 yards and rushed five times for 27 yards in addition to intercepting a pass on defense.

De Leon's first series of the second half ended with a fumble at the Crawford 2, but the Bearcats got the ball back when Pearson was sacked by Kelan Hodges and Aaron Riggs recovered the resulting fumble at the Pirates 34. Six plays later, Kevin Yeager connected with Calvin Martin for a 16-yard score. Martin had three catches for 27 yards.

Dutchsmann took over in the fourth quarter, carrying eight times for 98 yards, including TD runs of 4 and 35 yards.

"We gave up too many big plays, whether is was some of their wrap-around draws or the pass play," David Yeager said. "They threw and caught the ball. We had them covered and they threw and caught the ball well.

"They made the plays and we just didn't make the plays we needed to. I thought in spurts our defense played great, we just couldn't get anything going offensively to help our defense out."

Crawford Pirates sail away from De Leon, into state semifinals, 41-14
By CHAD CONINE Special to the Tribune Herald

GLEN ROSE–"For a while now, the Crawford Pirates have been adept at surviving, advancing and continuing to play football into December.

The Pirates did it again as they raced past District 7-2A rival De Leon in the second quarter and grasped a 41-14 victory on Friday night at Glen Rose ISD Tiger Stadium.

Crawford quarterback Gage Pearson passed for 126 yards, most of it in the first half, and running back Garrett Dutschmann rushed for 146, most of it in the second half, to propel the Pirates into the Class 2A Division I state semifinal next week.

Crawford (13-1), making a foray into the 15th week of the season for the second straight year, will play the winner of today’s Abernathy versus Anson game in Snyder. The Pirates lost in the state semifinal against eventual state champion Canadian a year ago.

“Playing in December, there’s nothing like it,” Crawford coach Delbert Kelm said. “The deeper you can play in December, the better it is. We’ve been to this round before so we’re going to just try to keep rolling and doing what we need to do.”

The Pirates led De Leon 28-7 at halftime. Then the Bearcats (11-3) scored first in the third quarter when quarterback Kevin Yeager threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Martin.

But Dutschmann ran for touchdowns of 4 and 35 yards in the fourth quarter to keep Crawford in front.

And the Pirates defense shut down the Bearcats the rest of the way. Crawford defensive back Jeff Ward intercepted a Yeager pass to set up Dutschmann’s second score that put the Pirates in front by 27 with 6:03 left.

Crawford withstood a gut check in the first quarter when De Leon hit a big play to take a 7-0 lead.

The Bearcats were backed up against their own goal line until Yeager threw to wide-open wide receiver Orson Sylva near the home sideline. Sylva caught the pass on the run and went 88 yards for a touchdown with 4:45 left in the first quarter.

But the Pirates responded by scoring touchdowns on four straight possessions from that point until halftime.

“It took us a little bit,” Kelm said. “We had a blown coverage on the long route, but outside of (the two touchdown passes), I can’t say enough about our defense. That’s a very talented football team.”

Pearson hit Ward for a 35-yard gain to the De Leon 10, kick starting the Crawford offense.

It took the Pirates four plays to score from the 10, but running back Noah Bleything made the drive count when he plunged into the end zone from a half yard out on fourth-and-goal.

Crawford linebacker Koby Smith took the ball back for the Pirates on De Leon’s ensuing possession.

Yeager found receiver Cooper Dyson open in the middle of the field, but Smith rushed in to strip the ball away from Dyson, setting up the Crawford offense at the Bearcats’ 34.

The Pirates moved in quickly on a five-play touchdown drive. Pearson capped it with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Steinkamp that gave Crawford a 14-7 lead with 8:12 left in the second quarter.

By that point, Pearson was confident in his pass protection and throwing darts to the Pirate receivers. He connected with Cade Johnston for a 30-yard gain that set up Crawford’s third touchdown.

Dillon Daniel ran nine yards to put the Pirates ahead 21-7 with 4:45 left in the second quarter.

Pearson, who finished the first half with 117 passing yards by connecting on 7 of 9 attempts, found Ward for a 24-yard touchdown with 1:21 left before halftime.

“I thought scoring right before halftime was big,” Kelm said. “Like I said, I think our guys answered every time we needed to.”

Crawford used a nickel package to help defend the De Leon passing game. But the Pirates still managed to pressure Yeager as defensive lineman Clayte Hickey posted two sacks in the first half.

The Pirates held De Leon to 188 yards of total offense in the first and second quarters, a huge chunk of those yards coming on the 88-yard touchdown."

Antelopes one win away from state tournament
                                  Skip Leon, Plainview Herald

"Abernathy is a bottom-line type of football team. They may not be the flashiest squad. They may not have that one superstar with statistics that look like video game numbers. They just find a way to win every week.
The Antelopes will look to add to their 10-game winning streak when they tangle with Anson for the Class 2A, Division I regional championship at 2 p.m. Saturday at Snyder. The winner will advance to the state tournament.
Abernathy has been in some close games this year and has had to come from behind on more than one occasion. Last week they beat Post, 24-21, on a last-second field goal by Bryson Daily. Twice in the second half Post scored touchdowns to go ahead and the Antelopes answered both times.
They held Post to a three-and-out with the score tied late in the game to set up the game-winning drive. Then, with just 11 ticks left on the clock, receiver Zachary Ponciano made an NFL-style catch at the sidelines, dragging his feet to stay inbounds as he dove for the ball. The play resulted in a 20-yard gain to the 10-yard line to set up the winning field goal.
The 21 points Post scored was the same total they had in the opening game of the season, when they shut out Abernathy 21-0 to hand them one of their two losses.
The previous week, Abernathy edged Hawley 22-21. They had to rally from two touchdowns down in the fourth quarter and scored the game-winner after recovering a Hawley fumble on a muffed punt.
Also along the way, Abernathy nipped New Deal 21-20 during the regular season in a game that decided the District 2-2A championship.
In their opening district game against Sundown, the Antelopes trailed 21-0 before coming back for a 28-24 victory.
Abernathy wins every week with old fashioned grit, fundamentals and perseverance. They’re at their best when they control the clock on offense and play as a unit on defense.
“We have good team chemistry,” Coach Darrell Daily said. “They believe in each other. They don’t give up. We’ve always had teams that do that. They play four quarters hard. That’s what they’re doing. If you believe in each other and play for four quarters, you’ve always got a chance.”
Saturday’s regional finals could come down to Abernathy’s ball-control offense and stingy defense against Anson’s fast-paced, high-scoring spread attack. The Tigers have scored more than 40 points eight times this season, including in each of their last four games. They have scored more than 50 points twice.
“They’re a really good spread football team,” Daily said. “They run and pass the ball. Their quarterback is a real good runner. They have a good back in the backfield who does a great job running and catching the ball. They have some talented receivers.”
The quarterback is Cade Baker, a 6-foot-3, 165-pound senior. In Anson’s 43-31 win over Forsan last week, Baker ran for 127 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 261 yards and a score. The running back is senior Mason Davis, who ran for 102 yards in the victory.
Four receivers caught passes for 46 yards or more, including Jacob Biggs who hauled in a 53-yard touchdown pass. Ethan Backus caught seven passes for 83 yards.
Daily said a key for the Antelopes will be to give Baker different looks on defense when he gets to the line of scrimmage.
“We’ve just got to play our defense, give them different looks,” Daily said. “We’ve got to pressure the quarterback and at times give them different looks and zones. That’s what we do on our defense and hopefully we can hold up to it.”
Abernathy’s defense is a balanced unit. Seven players have more than 50 tackles, led by Thomas Rodriguez and Mark Pando with 79 each. Joseph Sanchez has 71 stops. Defensive end Xavier Rivera has 64 tackles and leads the team with 19 tackles for loss. He had a key stop in the backfield late in the fourth quarter last week which forced Post to punt and set up the game-winning drive for Abernathy. Jacob Rosales has 12 tackles for loss.
On defense, Anson lines up in a 3-3 stack formation.
“They’re real aggressive,” Daily said. “They’re a 3-3 stack team with zone coverage behind it. They do a really good job. They have a really good middle linebacker who we have to account for. They’ve given up a good amount of points this year, but they do play good defense. “
Daily said the defense will be nothing new to his team.
“It’s a defense we see a lot. There are a lot of people running it,” the coach said. “We know how to attack it by formation. You’ve got to be balanced against it.”
And, as usual, Abernathy wants to hold onto the football.
“We’ve got to be balanced and control the ball like we did Friday (against Post), time of possession, all those things,” Daily said. “That’s just our game plan. We’ve got to do that.”
The Antelopes have been a run-dominant team this year, but their passing game has come along which allows them to be more balanced on offense. Last week against Post, Abernathy rushed for 192 yards and passed for 154 yards.
Quarterback Bryson Daily had 81 yards on the ground to give him more than 1,400 for the season. Pando ran for 60 yards and a touchdown and now has more than 1,100 yards rushing for the year.
Daily also completed 12-of-22 passes for 154 yards and threw touchdown passes to Pando and Kole Kurklin.
Darrell Daily said his team simply needs to continue to follow its winning formula.
“We’ve got to play a great game, be fundamentally sound, execute and play great defense like we’ve been playing,” he said. “If we do those things, we win the game.”
The winner of Saturday’s contest will go against the DeLeon-Crawford winner in the state semifinals next week."
