Long trip ends with a state championship for Galileo

The much-maligned Athletic Academic Association/San Francisco Section has a state champion.

For the second time in a calendar year, the AAA/SFS has produced a state champion after Galileo traveled 602 miles to defeat Vincent Memorial-Calexico 38-20 in the CIF State 6-A championship game at Calexico High School.

The Lions (11-2) scored 24 points in the third quarter to take control against the San Diego Section Division 7 champions.

With Galileo down 14-8 at halftime, AAA Player of the Year Yarvell Smith, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound sophomore running back, scored on a 25-yard run and quarterback Adrian Poot added a two-point conversion to give the Lions a 16-14 lead.
