Miramonte’s Sabrina Ionescu commits to Oregon

No basketball player in these parts has done better at deciding whether to shoot, drive or pass than two-time Metro Girls Player of the Year Sabrina Ionescu.

The recent Miramonte-Orinda graduate enjoyed a landmark season in which she made 285 baskets, including 102 three-pointers, and averaged 9.7 assists per game to help her earn National Player of the Year honors by MaxPreps and USA Today.

College coaches told Miramonte coach Kelly Sopak that when Ionescu plays the game, “it looks as if she is playing chess and everyone else is playing checkers.”

Ionescu finished the most drawn-out recruiting game Sunday by arriving at Oregon and handing head coach Kelly Graves a signed grant-in-aid agreement more than a month after the customary deadline for a national letter of intent.

According to Sopak, the grant-in-aid agreement is almost identical to a scholarship, guaranteed for four years and actually more student-athlete friendly than a NLI.

Once she missed the NLI signing period of May 18, it was her only option, one offered only to elite recruits.

The extra recruiting time allowed Ionescu to thoroughly survey the field, finally choosing between Washington, which made the Final Four, and Oregon, where it has been reported that her twin brother, Eddy, was going to try to walk on.

Sabrina, who set a McDonald’s All American Game record with 25 points to win MVP honors, has been criticized on social media for taking her time on her selection.

A deep recruiting class — the Ducks (24-11, 9-9 Pac-12 last season) signed seven players — lively sporting campus and family living in the area were among reasons it was the right choice for Ionescu.

St. Francis pitcher and outfielder Jeremy Ydens was the 1,216th and final pick of the 2016 MLB draft this month by the Cardinals.
