    Howard Payne and HSU split doubleheader

    BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons’ men’s basketball team used a strong second half to defeat Howard Payne, 75-64, on Thursday night at the Brownwood Coliseum in American Southwest Conference action.
    The Cowboys led most of the first half but it was close throughout and the score was tied seven times and the lead changed hands on six separate occasions. HPU used a late 7-0 run in the first half to take the lead and took a 34-32 lead into the halftime locker room.
    HSU’s defense came out strong in the second half and Joe Hoeup got going in transition with 12 points in the first seven minutes. Keenan Holdman gave HSU a 56-48 lead with 11:53 to play on a 3-point play in transition.
    Hoeup led four Cowboys in double figures with 21 points. Keenan Holdman and Chris Barrett had 15 points and Keilyn Nance had 14 points. Khyce Randall and Shadd Cole led HPU with 13 points.
    The Cowboys are now 6-11 overall and 4-5 in conference play. Howard Payne fell to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in conference action.
    HSU will travel to Alpine to take on ASC West leader Sul Ross State on Saturday at 4 p.m.


    HPU tops HSU Cowgirls in ASC West play

    BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team could not overcome a frigid shooting first half in an 83-54 American Southwest Conference loss at Howard Payne on Thursday night at the Brownwood Coliseum.
    The Cowgirls shot just 6-for-41 in the first half as Howard Payne led 41-17 at halftime. The Cowgirls came out of the halftime locker room and showed some signs of getting back into the game and cut the deficit to 45-28, but the Lady Jackets recovered and pushed the lead back to 63-35 at the end of the third quarter.
    The Cowgirls improved in the second half by shooting 40.5 percent but for the game finished 21-for-78 for 26.9 percent. Howard Payne hit 34-of-72 shots in the game for a 47.2 percent shooting percentage.
    Danie Mabry and Kaitlyn Ellis each had 13 points to pace the Cowgirls. Jada Evans led Howard Payne with 20 points.
    HSU is now 4-12 on the year and 2-7 in ASC action. Howard Payne improved to 11-6 overall and 7-2 in league play. The Cowgirls will play at Sul Ross State on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a crucial game towards making the ASC postseason tournament.
