    Concordia sweeps HSU in Saturday double-header

    Cowgirls Fall To Concordia
    ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons’ Addison Garcia hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer that was initially called good, but replay review determined it was shot after the buzzer and the Cowgirl basketball team fell 62-59 in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex on Saturday.
    The Cowgirls overcome a slow start to take a 33-27 halftime lead. Concordia closed the first quarter on a 15-4 run to take a 15-7 lead. In the second quarter, the Cowgirls turned it around and outscored the Tornados 26-12.
    HSU led 51-41 going into the fourth quarter, but went just 2-for-10 in the final quarter and Concordia chipped away at the deficit. Taylor Seastrunk’s free throws with 1:47 to play gave the Cowgirls a 59-57 lead but Kaycie Dunkerley gave Concordia a 60-59 lead with 1:31 to play on a 3-pointer.
    Jaela DeJean picked up a steal and drove in for a lay-up with :03 to play. The Cowgirls called a timeout and Garcia got an open look in the corner that she made but it came just after the buzzer.
    Danie Mabry paced the Cowgirls with a game-high 20 points and Garcia added 11. Payton Berger led the Tornados with 18 points and Mercedes Ellison had 15 points.
    The Cowgirls are now 4-11 overall and 2-6 in ASC action. Concordia improved to 7-9 overall and 3-5 in league play and snapped a seven-game losing streak overall. HSU will travel to Brownwood to play Howard Payne on Thursday.


    Tornados Nip Cowboys Late


    ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons’ men’s basketball team dropped a 97-94 game to Concordia in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex on Saturday evening.
    The Cowboys came out strong in the first half and Caleb Spoon hit five straight 3-pointers and scored 24 points in the first half as HSU pushed out to a 32-20 lead. Concordia battled back and cut into the deficit but HSU led 57-56 at half.
    HSU pushed the lead out to 67-58 on a Joe Hoeup alley-oop dunk with 17:31 to play. The Cowboys led 90-84 with 3:33 to go before Joe Neal took over for the Tornados. Neal scored 11 points in the final 3:23 of the game.
    Neal game the Tornados a 93-92 lead with :38 to play and HSU retook the lead with a pair of Chris Barrett free throws. Neal added two more free throws and the Cowboys had the ball with a chance at the win but Spoon was called for a travel.
    HSU fouled and Ephraim Price who hit a pair of free throws. Spoon then had a shot to tie the game and his shot through contact fell off the rim.
    Spoon led the Cowboys with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Keilyn Nance added 20 points. Hoeup finished with 17 points and Chris Barrett had 13 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
    Neal had 26 points for the Tornados off the bench and Price added 14.
    The Cowboys are 5-11 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Concordia improved to 12-4 on the season and 6-2 in league play. HSU will travel to Brownwood for a 7:30 p.m. game.
