McMurry men fall to Schreiner at home

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University men’s basketball had its modest two-game win streak snapped, dropping a non-conference tilt at home to Schreiner University, 86-69, at Kimbrell Arena. The loss dropped the War Hawks to 4-4 on the year, while the Mountaineers improved to 3-4.
McM lost both games of the series this season to SU. The Mountaineers also took an 82-73 win in Kerrville back on November 24.
Both teams shot well from the floor – Schreiner knocking down 51 percent (26-51) and the War Hawks 45 percent (27-60) – but it was at the free throw line where the Mountaineers created separation from McMurry. McM connected on just 11-of-23 (48 percent) from the charity stripe. Conversely, SU had 16 more attempts and 16 more made free throws than did the War Hawks.
Schreiner held a slight edge in rebounds (39-34) and both teams had turnover troubles (23 for McM and 20 for SU). The Mountaineers converted McM miscues into 22 points. McMurry’s bench out-scored the Schreiner reserves, 32-26.
McM battled their guests early on, but SU took the lead for good at the 14:23 mark f the first half. By the intermission, the visitors had built a 19-point cushion (47-28) on the War Hawks. SU maintained the comfortable advantage the second half, with McM closing to within 12 points – 70-58 – with 6:03 left to play on a LaRandall Scroggins jumper.
Scroggins, a senior, would finish the game as the War Hawks lone double-digit scorer. Scroggins booked 17 points, hitting 8-of-13 from the floor. He also pulled down five rebounds in his 30 minutes of work.
Sophomore Zacc Carter hit 3-of-6 from the field and finished with eight points. Darius Watts, Mike Williams Jr. and Colin Taylor all registered six points in the totals. Point guard Dedrick Berry Jr. had five points and five assists.
Senior Aaron Gettys led McM with seven rebounds. Williams hauled in six caroms, as well.
McM will return to American Southwest Conference play next Wednesday (Dec. 20) at the University of Texas-Dallas.
