Dorrel pleased with defense after day 1

The ACU Wildcats had their first practice of the 2017 season Thursday, and new head coach Adam Dorrel wasn't happy with the team's performance at all, but even through it he found a positive outlook.

One of the bright points of ACU's first practice was their defense.

Dorrel liked what he saw in those guys. Which is good because defense is very important to the new head coach. A key leader on the defensive side of the ball is linebacker Sam Denmark who Dorrel praised after practice as a leader for the program both on and off the field.

"Sam's a leader for us. A hard nosed kid. Been here a long time, really cares about ACU. Not just the football aspect of it, but his education and his campus," Dorrel said. "He's a very powerful leader for us. Defense did great in 7 on 7 and one-on-one drills. They did a really good job of going after the football. They had really good enthusiasm, and you know the type of football team we want to be, I want to have as a head football coach, it starts with defense, so I feel like we're making a lot of head wind with defense."

The Cats will keep working toward improving as fall camp continues this week.
