APD Officers Join Cooper at Saturday Practice

Head Coach Todd Moebes and the Cooper Cougars had a special practice Saturday that involved some important members in the Abilene community.

The Cougars' theme this season is "Bridge the Gap" and coach Moebes hoped to do that this weekend by including several APD officers in the practice.

The players didn't know they were hanging out with the officers who encouraged the guys and even sprinted with the team at the end of practice.

The officers said their hope is to be more approachable for the athletes.

"With the recent events in Dallas and all over our country, we certainly felt moved to bridge the gap," Moebes said. "Just to be able to build a different relationship and build up a more trusting relationship. Those that are our law enforcement officers are here to help and here to serve, and we just wanted to be able to send a message to our guys that they're humans just like them."

Asst. Chief Mike Perry (:24-:29) said,"We're all on the same team," APD Assistant Chief Mike Perry said. "We're all working for the same goals, we are approachable if they ever have anything they need. The reality is, most of what we do is helping people. When you need help, we want to be the ones you come to to get help."

The APD has an open invitation to come back to any Cooper practice.

The Cougs travel to San Angelo next week to scrimmage San Angelo Central.
