BELTON, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team saw its late rally fall short in a 77-74 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action in Belton.

The Cru led 66-53 with 6:53 to play in the game but the Cowgirls cut the deficit to tie the game at 71-71 with an 18-3 run over the next 3:19.

In the run, Kourtney Holyfield hit a 3-pointer and a regular 3-point play and Madison Spears had a pair of 3-pointers. Danie Mabry tied the game at 71 with a pair of free throws with 1:36 to play.

Kourtney Bevers had a bucket for the Cru and Addison Garcia missed a 3-pointer for the Cowgirls on the next possession. Tori Tucker made a runner in the lane to make it 75-71, but Spears quickly hit a 3-pointer to make it 75-74 with :24 to play.

HSU had to foul three times to get the Cri to the line as the Cowgirls were not yet over the limit. Bevers hit both free throws with 10.4 to play.

The Cowgirls designed a play to get Holyfield open for a 3-pointer and she got a good luck but it rimmed out at the buzzer.

The Cowgirls had jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter, before the Cru went on an 18-3 run and eventually led 31-24. Garcia scored the last six points of the second quarter to give the Cru a 31-30 lead at halftime.

Garcia led the Cowgirls with a career-high 23 points. Holyfield had 16 and Spears added 14. Jonelle Smith led the Cru with 19 points. Kendra Wynn added 15 off the bench and Tucker had 14.

The Cowgirls close the regular season with a record of 10-15 and finished 6-8 in the ASC West to place third. HSU will play LeTourneau in the first round of the ASC Tournament at UT-Tyler on Thursday at noon.

UMHB finished the regular season with a record of 15-10 and 9-5 in the ASC West to place second in the division.
