The Midland Lee Rebels are 1-1 in 2015, losing to SV 21-14 and beating EP Coronado 46-28. The SLC Dragons are also 1-1, losing to Westlake 20-14 before beating Tulsa Union 34-30. SLC leads the all-time series 5-0, most recently winning last season 56-6.

LEE REPORT: Running game helps Rebels stop 10-game skid

A week after flexing its defensive muscle against Smithson Valley, the Lee football team added an especially strong running game to the mix in its 46-28 win against El Paso Coronado on Friday in El Paso.

Most importantly for the Rebels (1-1), a 10-game losing streak dating back to last September was snapped in impressive fashion. That was made possible by a complete game effort which featured a bit more offensive prowess than the team showed in the season opener.

Lee head coach James Morton said his players and coaching staff felt rejuvenated after the road win.
“It was awesome for the kids,” Morton said. “I was so excited. There was a lot of excitement in the locker room, like you should have after a win. I think for us as a team, it was more about us being 0-1, than it has been about what happened last year.”

Although penalties were still somewhat of an issue, the Lee offense was able to move the ball each series and ultimately score 46 points.
“We played better offensively, a little bit more consistency,” Morton said. “We still have a lot to work on. But I thought our offensive line was more physical, which was a big key for us. They (Coronado) were trying to stop our inside stuff a lot and that opened up some outside stuff for us. Overall we were pleased with the run game.”

One of the leaders of the Rebels’ rushing attack was senior running back Tony Jones, who picked up 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns on an efficient 11 carries. As a team, Lee pounded right through the Coronado defense, as it racked up 343 yards on 55 carries -- a healthy team average of 6.2 yards per run.

Over two games this season, Jones has accounted for 120 yards and three scores on 18 touches. Since Lee has a multitude of capable ball carriers, Jones said he is feeling fresh and confident in what he’s been able to do in his first season as a varsity back.

“My legs feel fresher than they have in the last two weeks,” Jones said. “I’m pretty psyched.”

Shifty junior quarterback Nicco Sorianello, who has shown the ability to evade defenders in the pocket this season, also put his mark on win. He finished with 23 yards and a score on four carries and also threw a 19-yard touchdown strike to Taye Britt on his only pass of the game.

Sorianello said that he’s becoming more comfortable with the two quarterback system that Morton has employed to start the season. He isn’t affected by the prospect of less playing time, because he believes he’s always ready to contribute when he is called upon.
“I feel confident in (starting quarterback) Sema’J (Davis),” Sorianello said. “But if they ever need me, I’m ready to help the team in any way because I think we both have a good understanding of the offense.”

And junior receiver C.J. Robles, who was relatively quiet in the Smithson Valley game, emerged to produce a nice all-around effort against the Thunderbirds. He ran for 15 yards on his only carry and also caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Davis in the fourth quarter.
It’s all part of an effort for Davis and Sorinaello to get as many players involved in the offense as possible. It’s a day-by-day effort in practice, by Robles believes his team is getting closer
to where it wants to be offensively.

“The first game wasn’t the best,” Robles said. “But honestly we’re coming up. We’re a young team and we’re going to do very good this year.”

Rebel Yells

-- Despite running the ball well over the first two games -- the team now is averaging 243.5 rushing yards per contest -- the Rebels’ passing game is still lagging and is beginning to rely on big, timely plays for success. Collectively, Lee quarterbacks Davis and Sorinaello have completed just 19 of their 45 passes for 240 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. If the Rebels can clean up their passing game, their offense really has a chance to take off.

-- Lee’s defense was stingy once again against the Thunderbirds. It allowed just 280 total yards, despite giving up 28 points -- six of which came on a score with one second left in the game. The Rebels tackled well and prevented big plays by Coronado, which is something the unit keyed in on going into the game.
Morton said he is still looking for his defense to start creating more turnovers, as the Rebels didn’t force a turnover against Coronado. Still, the unit lined up well and contained the Thunderbirds’ offense from start to finish. Morton said he was happy with his players’ physicality.

-- Lee accumulated six penalties for 60 yards against Coronado. That’s not a particularly terrible result since a couple of the calls came on holding penalties. Morton said he can live with those calls that are made during a live play when kids are competing hard and trying to make something happen. Morton added that it’s important for the offense to avoid pre-snap penalties and any type of offensive formation penalties going forward. Keeping downs and distances manageable by not moving backwards is essential to any offense, but especially to a younger one such as Lee’s.

-- The Lee players aren’t letting the spectacle of playing Southlake Carroll this Friday faze them. They are treating Friday as simply another football game on the schedule and an opportunity to take a step forward as a team. It’s a challenge that the players are looking forward to. “I think the biggest thing is that it’s your attitude that you take in,” Morton said. “It’s not the scheme they do or the scheme that we do. It’s the attitude and how we embrace this. That’s a big part of the whole thing of playing Southlake.”

-- Morton said that he’s brought in two more players -- Luis Aranda and Nate Ortiz, both of whom played on the Lee varsity soccer team this past season -- as depth options to help Dedrick Strambler with kicking duties. Ortiz went 4-for-6 on extra points against Coronado. Strambler is still expected to handle most of the punting responsibilities for Lee.

-- Injury report: Senior defensive back Tristian Martinez did not play against Coronado due to a minor shin injury. He is expected to return for the Carroll game on Friday. Senior defensive back Wesley Hall is also nursing an ankle injury that he sustained in week 1. Senior defensive end Josh Carrasco is questionable for Friday’s game. Senior linebacker Tyler Thames, who injured his right knee against Smithson Valley, is currently rehabbing in a brace but is doubtful to return before the start of district play.

The sounds of DIXIE were pretty well absent from Dragon Stadium last night.

Kudos to Midland ISD for allowing Lee's band and drill team to travel with the team. They made a good amount of noise in support of the Reb's. It would have been pretty quiet on the visitor's side without them.

SOUTHLAKE — A year ago, Southlake Carroll went to West Texas and beat Midland Lee by 50.
It was easy to assume, then, that its Friday home opener against the Rebels would be as routine as the rest of the wins Carroll has collected at Dragon Stadium over the years. And it was.

Carroll cruised, beating Lee 52-14 behind four touchdowns and 279 totals yards from Lil’Jordan Humphrey and a 20-of-30 passing performance from Mason Holmes.

Humphrey caught three touchdowns, and rushed for another. But while the highly recruited senior was expected to star this season, Carroll entered the year with a bigger question mark at quarterback — or at least a decision to make between the junior Holmes and senior Montana Murphy.

Holmes only further entrenched himself as Carroll’s starter Friday, throwing for 285 yards and five touchdowns in his second career varsity start.
He was 6-for-6 with two touchdown passes to start the game.

Ashton Akbar scored on a 78-yard run in the first quarter for Lee (1-2), but the Dragons kept pushing, adding the touchdown run by Humphrey. Eight seconds before halftime, Holmes hit Humphrey for another score, a 16-yard fade to the left corner, putting Carroll up 31-7.

The Dragons’ defense limited Lee quarterback Sema’J Davis to 3-of-11 passing.

Lee wasn’t the stiff competition Carroll will have to beat to win District 7-6A or advance deep in the playoffs. However, the blowout — as scrimmage-like as it became by halftime — was reassurance for a team that lost its opener against Austin Westlake and trailed 23-7 in the third quarter last week.

Carroll came back against Tulsa Union, beating the Oklahoma power 34-30. Holmes finished with 336 yards and two touchdowns in his debut. He looked comfortable again Friday on a windy night in front of Carroll’s packed home side.

“The past couple weeks have been really good, getting to build chemistry with those receivers and the starting line,” Holmes said. “It’s definitely a lot different than JV football, but after the first couple of snaps [against Union], I got in a rhythm, and really in the second half got in a rhythm. The defense [at varsity level] is a lot faster, a lot bigger.”

The competition between Murphy and Holmes was close, so Carroll coach Hal Wasson went with the older player first, playing Murphy against Westlake. He wanted Holmes to have a chance, too, and when Holmes got one, he took advantage.

“We weren’t going to get into this three series here, three series there,” Wasson said. “We wanted Montana to get a game in against a good team. I wanted Mason to get a game in against a good team, both in hostile environments. The end result is that Mason is our guy.”

Some thought I was serious on the prediction. Again, something is wrong in Midland (both). I respect both head coach's and there are enough kids to build good teams. It's just not working out. Now watch them both beat Permian.
