Abilene @ San Angelo Central - Week 1

    From the Reporter News

ABILENE HIGH (0-0) AT SAN ANGELO CENTRAL (0-0)

    7:30 p.m. Friday * San Angelo Stadium * KTLT 98.1 FM

What's riding on the game: This is the season opener for both teams and the first nondistrict meeting between them since 2005. This will be the 96th meeting in the series, which started in 1910 and is the oldest in Abilene High history. "All the work, the pain and suffering that these guys have gone through since January of getting themselves ready, now they get to reap the benefits of their hard work," AHS coach Del Van Cox said of opening the season. "We're excited about going against somebody different that starts to count."

Last meeting: Despite giving up 432 passing yards — the second most by an opponent in Abilene High history — the Eagles held on for a 41-24 victory last year in the District 3-6A opener at Shotwell Stadium. Abilene High scored three touchdowns in a 5:14 stretch of the second quarter to go up 24-10. Eagles running back Abram Smith and quarterback Peyton Killam combined to rush for 226 yards and three touchdowns for AHS. Killam added 106 passing yards, becoming the fourth quarterback in AHS history to have 100 yards rushing and passing in a game. Eagles defensive back Ray Velasquez scored on a 21-yard fumble return and had a 59-yard interception return.

Scouting Central: The Bobcats return 15 starters from last year's 11-2 team, but will have a slightly different look. Clay Vincent moves from wide receiver to quarterback, replacing Brennen Wooten (TCU), and running back Daven Manning (782 yards, 12 TDs rushing) returns to run behind an experience offensive line. Central has two receivers — Aaron Wooten and Adam West — who had more than 600 receiving yards last year. Linebacker Gerhig Scott (101 tackles) and defensive back Brock Martin (83 tackles, 3 interceptions) return to lead the defense. "We've definitely got familiarity with these guys because we've played them for the last few years," Cox said. "I'm going to say they're going to be one of the best teams we'll play all season. They've got a great program. Coach (Brent) Davis does a great job. They've got a great coaching staff. They've got good kids. It's definitely going to be a real test for us. They're going to keep doing exactly what they've been doing. They're going to find what this new quarterback does and try to exploit his skills."

Eagles update: Cox said the Eagles were able to address pretty much all of their lineup questions through offseason, spring practice and preseason drills. "Our offensive and defensive lines had some good performances (in last week's scrimmage with Copperas Cove), especially with our (first team). We're feeling good about that. We feel good about our passing game and our defense. We feel good about where we're at. We're not where we want to be, but we've got a good start." AHS returns starters at every skill position, including Smith (1,813 yards, 24 TDs rushing) and Killam (122-190-2—1,518, 10 TDs passing). Linebackers Terrell Franklin (68 tackles) and Dackota Triano (56 tackles), and defensive back Qua'Shawn Washington (56 tackles) are back to lead the defense. The Eagles will be without defensive back Isaac Buenrrostro (ankle). "We've always said if you can avoid injuries, but that's what everybody says at this time of year," Cox said. "It's definitely a concern, but that's part of football. We've created some depth going both ways, which will help us later on."

What the Eagles need to do to win: Take care of business. While the Eagles have a more in-depth game plan this week than last, Cox said the main thing is for the Eagles to concentrate on continuing to improve their own performance. "We're going to prepare for them to make sure we know exactly what they're going to do, let our kids know," he said. "But this is a long process of making sure that we're getting better. We want to make sure that we take care of the football, we get better in the kicking game, we get better in our up-front blocking schemes. It's a matter of us getting ourselves better for the district competition."

Sam Waller's prediction: Abilene High 27, San Angelo Central 24.

SAN ANGELO — The 2016 season got off to a humbling start Friday for the Abilene High Eagles.

The San Angelo Central Bobcats struck early, often and from just about anywhere they wanted in rolling to a 63-26 victory over the Eagles at San Angelo Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

"There's no question there's a lot of things we've got to fix," AHS coach Del Van Cox said after the Eagles' worst setback since a 63-28 loss at Southlake Carroll in 2014. "We didn't tackle well. We didn't execute well in the fundamentals. If you don't do that against really good teams, they expose you.

"We did some uncharacteristic things tonight and that was disappointing, but there are things we can fix. The good thing about is it's Game 1. We've got two or three games to get things cleaned up and be ready for district."

After falling 31-24 at Abilene last year and squeezing out a 21-20 win in San Angelo two years ago, the Bobcats weren't expecting to have their way with the Eagles like they did Friday.

"Not at all," Central head coach Brent Davis said after guiding the Bobcats to their 17th straight win at home. "That's a great football team. We just kind of jumped on them quick.

"I just can't say enough. Like I told my kids, I don't think we've had a win like that against a really good team since I've been here (since 2009)."

Central quarterback Cal Vincent, making his first varsity start at the position, accounted for 481 total yards and six touchdowns rushing and passing as the Bobcats steamrolled the Eagles. Four of Central's TDs, including a 98-yard run by Vincent to open the second half, covered at least 69 yards.

"He's unbelievable," Davis said of Vincent, who has played quarterback his whole career except for last season when he was a first-team all-district receiver. "We knew he had that ability. He's such a smart kid. "People don't realize that a lot of what we do is because of how smart he is. We're pairing plays and he's making the right decisions all the time. When you do that man, it's hard to stop it."

Vincent rushed for 256 yards on eight carries, scoring on runs of 32, 73 and 98 yards. He was 14 of 21 passing for 225 yards and three TDs, including a 69-yarder to Adam West.

West finished with six catches for 142 yards and two TDs, while running back Daven Manning added 143 yards and two TDs on seven carries.

The Central starting offense scored on eight of its nine series, taking a knee to run out the first half.

"(Central) just did an outstanding job in their scheme, but there's some things we missed fundamentally, tackling and all that," Cox said. "There's definitely things we can get fixed."

Eagles quarterback Peyton Killam, who accounted for 170 total yards and rushed for a score, said the team simply had to move on.

"(Central's) just a very solid team," he said. "We didn't come out and show any intensity and they came out fighting. Lesson learned. We've just got to be better."

Abilene High finished with 408 total yards and wasn't even close to keeping pace with the Bobcats, who gained 646.

Abram Smith, who was pulled before halftime as the game quickly got out of hand, rushed for 140 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns. Smith's 19-yard TD run late in the first quarter got AHS within 14-7. By the time he reached the end zone again, this time on a 74-yard run, Central led 35-14.

Henry Howard's 24-yard fumble return for a score gave Central a 49-14 lead at the half and the Bobcats led 63-14 by the end of the third quarter.

The Eagles pulled a little closer against Central's backups in the fourth quarter as Killam scored on a 5-yard run and Jonathan Manry kicked field goals of 39 and 36 yards.

Killam finished 10 of 23 passing for 120 yards and rushed for 50 yards on 19 carries. He spent most of the night facing heavy pressure from the Bobcat defense.

"The big deal was the rush," Cox said. "We didn't get much time. We've got to get better at giving Peyton some protection. We can always get better at that. It's always a struggle early, but we're going to be able to look at film and fix some things."

Qua'Shawn Washington led Abilene High's receivers with five catches for 46 yards.

Can't say I expected the game to go that way, but the Cats dominated.

Central flat out dominated and man handled Abilene, very humbling for both players and fans. Central may be on the verge of doing something special this year. Congrats and it was a pleasure seeing all the oldies from your 66 State Championship team. Oh and your band. I was trekking up the hill during halftime, they announced 300+ and I was like wow! Watching from atop, sound was very good and formations were very good as well. They may be making another trip to State again this year!

The band of the past few years has turned me into a bandaholic. They're good and fun to watch. Up to 343 this year. This year they're finally going out on the field to play stuff before the game instead of just sitting in the stands. Don't know why they do everything so early though then 20 minutes of nothing until the players run out.

People around the state are hyping Central up now, but they need to simmer down and see what happens in a few more games first.

Well stated........but you can hardly blame people, your margin of victory was one of the biggest surprises of week one. Of course most everybody is now expecting SAC to do a number on BN, If it's a close game you'll be surprised how quickly the hype fades away.

I was certainly surprised by the score result. I expected SAC to win, but not by such a huge margin.

BN is a quality team and should provide a nice challenge. At least in theory and going by how competitive they were with Sasche. Also a home game for them. Last season was certainly a tight game.

I think the hype will die down after this week. I have a feeling BN is pretty good and it will be a good game.
