Liberty tops Clayton Valley in North Coast Section football semifinal

Quarterback Jay Butterfield and the Liberty-Brentwood offense needed almost a half to shake off the rust. Then they hit top speed.
The Lions got their first points with 15 seconds left in the first half before scoring 35 in the second half to roll to a 42-14 North Coast Section Open Division semifinal win over visiting Clayton Valley-Concord on Saturday.
“We needed a half to kind of get it together,” Liberty coach Ryan Partridge said in his first postgame interview in 29 days. “Me too. I was kind of struggling.”
Friday’s semifinal was played 21 days after its original date, the game delayed because of air quality issues as a result of the Camp Fire.
“It felt great to finally get out here,” Butterfield said.
