    Sacred Heart Cathedral holds off St. Ignatius

    St. Ignatius High School’s Charlie Katz heaved the ball toward the northwest corner of Kezar Stadium. There, wide receiver David Woodruff was laying out for the ball, diving into the dark corner. The entire stadium caught its breath for a moment until ... the ball bounced harmlessly away.

    The final play of Friday night’s Bruce-Mahoney game — a 21-14 win by Sacred Heart Cathedral — lived up to the history of the series. The Fighting Irish (4-0, 1-0 West Catholic Athletic League) ended a five-game losing streak to the Wildcats. St. Ignatius holds a 61-26-7 series lead.
