De La Salle-Monte Vista is irresistible 1-2 matchup

The Chronicle’s two top-ranked teams collide to close the regular season in what should be the highlight of a tremendous weekend of rivalry games and others that will decide league championships.

Second-ranked Monte Vista-Danville (9-0), the East Bay Athletic League champion, travels to top-ranked De La Salle-Concord (8-1) in a 7 p.m. Friday game that could be a preview of the North Coast Section new Open Division title game in a month.

[...] the Spartans have gone 277 consecutive games without a loss to a Northern California opponent.

“We just have to remember they are a high school football team, nothing more or less,” longtime Monte Vista assistant coach Chris Bab**** said.

After struggling early, De La Salle’s defense has looked vintage lately, with nine combined points allowed in its past three games.

The key player could be Monte Vista receiver and defensive back Isaiah Randle (36 catches, 829 yards, 14 TDs, three interceptions).

The game came down to a last-second two-point conversion call that Monte Vista stopped just inches short near the left pylon.

All eyes will be on Mission QB Niamey Harris, but the Bears won’t forget about Lincoln QB Roel Marania, a third-year starter who has accounted for 1,272 yards and 17 TDs.

San Leandro (6-3, 4-0) at Burrell Field-San Leandro, 7 p.m. Friday: A league championship is on the line, pitting teams with outstanding running backs in O’Dowd sophomore Austin Jones (1,059 yards, 19 touchdowns) and San Leandro senior Omari Land (1,165, 16).

    No. 11 Cardinal Newman (8-1, 6-0 NBL) at No. 23 Rancho Cotate (7-2, 6-0), 7:30 p.m. Friday:

Besides a league championship on the line, this is great matchup of dual-threat quarterbacks in Newman’s Jordan Brookshire, approaching 10,000 career total yards, and Cotate junior Jake Simmons (2,830 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, four interceptions, 560 rushing yards, eight TDs this season).

Antioch’s refurbished stadium will be packed not only because it’s the 98th renewal of the Big Little Game rivalry but also because fans are hoping for a repeat of last year’s epic 44-42 Antioch victory.

Serra can assure itself of a co-championship with Valley Christian and St. Francis with a victory, but much will depend on the health of quarterback Leki Nunn, the 2015 WCAL Player of the Year who has missed most of the season with a neck injury.
