Teaching, victories keep Bellarmine coach going

Bellarmine football coach Mike Janda turned 65 this year.

Last fall, he picked up his 270th victory to become the winningest coach in Central Coast Section history.

The win was monumental, a 42-35 Northern California Division I-AA regional-final decision at favored Folsom, a team that had won 25 in a row overall and 43 straight at home.

Considering that eight first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League players would graduate, no one could have blamed Janda for leaving, too.

With 16 new starters, the Bells have regrouped and won two tough games, 34-20 over then-No. 21 Menlo-Atherton and 32-21 at Clovis North after trailing 14-0.

The Bells (2-0) face perhaps their toughest test at 7 p.m. Friday when they play Sac-Joaquin Section power Del Oro-Loomis (2-0) at San Jose City College.

Last year’s WCAL Sophomore of the Year Cade Hall (noseguard and center) has improved, and returning starting quarterback Ike Ogbogu has impressed.

Last year, the Golden Eagles, made up primarily of juniors, started 2-6 but won their final eight to take the state Division II-AA title.

The offense is led by quarterback Stone Smartt, running backs Camrion Davis and Dalton Gee, each of whom rushed for more than 900 yards last season, and versatile two-way starter Mason Hurst.

The high-powered Tigers can lay claim to kings of the Redwood Empire with a win on the road.

Foothill has four straight wins over the Mustangs, who rested last week after a 49-7 opening-night rout of a good Deer Valley-Antioch squad.

Intriguing matchup between perennial small-school Southern Section power Paso Robles against six-time defending Oakland Section champ McClymonds.

In a new offering featured on SFGate.com, The Chronicle will be live streaming several high school football games.
