Late-blooming lineman leads way Serra High's running game

Even though Jack Dreyer is 6-foot-8, 290 pounds, and, by all accounts, conscientious and very smart, his rise to the top of the high school football food chain has been under the radar, and somewhat by accident.

The Serra senior offensive tackle and Stanford commit didn't play football until his freshman season.

Though athletic enough, tall and skinny linemen don't often make it and Dreyer was no natural.

[...] he'd given up basketball, his body had filled out, and he'd begun to look like a big-time player.

Dreyer, who just turned 17, helped Serra to a West Catholic Athletic League record for total yards last season and its first Central Coast Section division title.

The Padres also almost beat perennial power De La Salle-Concord, the host for their 2014 opener Friday night.

Dreyer said it stung until one day when he got a call from his mother while driving friends home.

Are you kidding?' I never even thought of college football last year, Dryer said.

Make a football highlight tape and send it to recruiters.

Riordan features running backs Ramone Sanders (a 5-foot-8, 160-pound sprinter) and Jamarion Caston (6-0, 220), both members of the 16-and-under USA football team.
