With Calcagno as coach, St. Francis has big goals

St. Francis football coach Greg Calcagno never planned to follow in his father’s large and deep footsteps. After quarterbacking St. Francis to its first undefeated season (13-0) in 1982 and a college football career at Santa Clara, Greg entered the business world for 20 years before returning to his high school, where his three children attended and many close friends worked. [...] Calcagno relishes the challenge and the notion that he and his family’s life “has come full circle.” After their first win over Mitty in eight seasons last weekend, a 15-14 slugfest, the Lancers are 4-1 and tied for the West Catholic Athletic League lead with Serra at 2-0. Last week against Mitty, Devin Hurtado rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns, and 6-foot-5, 220-pound outside linebacker Steven Dinneen had 15 tackles and three sacks, giving him 11 sacks this season. Foothill snapped a five-game losing streak to a similarly big and physical San Ramon Valley-Danville this season, winning 40-28. Coach Vic Galli always seems to get the Pirates rolling by the time Bay Valley Athletic League play begins. Washington-bound LB Ben Burr-Kirven could return for SHP after missing five games with calf and Achilles tendon injuries.
