Daily Craig: The banks are closed

Veterans Day. The day 19 year old bank tellers don't have to work. 11TH DAY 11TH MONTH, ETC. One of my friends was asked why it was a holiday and he said "It's Veterans Birthday." He took a second tour of third grade. I am supposed to be writing a sporting type column. OK. It was a really slow day in sports. We learned the TEXANS aren't supposed to beat the Bengals. We also got good news that 2 Astros, Misters Altuve and Keuchel won gold gloves. You get one of those for being a superior defender. They don't figure to ever give one of those to JAMES HARDEN, but I shouldn't mix my sports awards. I will be in attendance at tonight's ROCKETS GAME courtesy of my son. He got the tickets. I pick up the dinner check. That's how it works and I am very pleased that it does.

I am told the ROCKETS will spend some time honoring VETS. 5 years ago I was at the U. OF Georgia during veterans week and the school was honoring the various branches by playing the music of that branch. We were at the Dawgs game and the ceremony was at the half. THEY PLAYED "ANCHORS AWAY" and the Navy stood, and so on. THE MARINES familiar song kicked in and I stood. So did about 500 other guys. I was impressed until I REALIZED it was the line for the men's room. SEMPER FI , or something like that. I assume the COUGARS will honor the military too. THE COOGS ARE 9-0 and for the first time in memory tickets might be hard to get. Let's hope all the Vets get in. I gotta thank my late father, his father, my late uncles, and all those who served before me. It's working no matter how screwed up things seem to be. It could be worse. You could be a Cowboys fan. I had a weird memory jolt this morning. I was an MP at Camp Pendleton and my duty one day was joining 2 other MARINES as we retired the flag at sunset at Mainside. I looked into the setting sun and flag slowly came down. All traffic and duty on the base stopped in honor of the Stars and Stripes. I don't know why I thought of that, but I am glad.
