    Cowgirls Late Rally Falls Short

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team made a late rally but came up short in a 78-71 loss to Nebraska Wesleyan on Monday at the Mabee Complex.
Neither team led by more than six points in a tightly-contested first half as NWU led 37-33 at halftime.
A quick 8-0 run early in the third quarter pushed NWC out to a 47-38 lead and it expanded to 61-46 at the end of the third quarter.
HSU chipped away the whole fourth quarter. Danie Mabry’s steal and 3-point play cut the deficit to 72-69 with 1:31 to play but the Cowgirls could get no closer.
Nebraska Wesleyan took advantage of the free throw stripe in the game hitting 26-of-28 free throws. The Cowgirls went 8-for-14.
Mabry led the Cowgirls with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals. Taylor Gaffney added 14 points and Heidi Schroeder had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Addie Wetzel led Nebraska Wesleyan with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Caitlin Navratil added 15 points.
The Cowgirls are now 3-8 on the year and the Prairie Wolves improved to 9-2. HSU will return to American Southwest Conference action on Thursday when it hosts East Texas Baptist at 5:30.
