    Monterey tops Cooper 51-44

The Cooper Cougars had a successful non-district season, and hoped to bring that energy and winning spirit to their district opener against Lubbock Monterey on Friday.
Unfortunately, that was not the case.
The Cougs started the game sluggish, falling behind the Plainsmen 34-14 at the half.
After the break, they came back with some fire under their bellies. After giving up a field goal to start the 3rd, Cooper's special teams stepped up.
The Cougars blocked a punt, and capitalized on it with a TD run by Tyrees Whitfield to close the gap 37 to 21.
Not long after, Cooper recovered a bad snap by Monterey on a punt, and Whitfield would score again to make it 37-29.
Cooper would score twice more, but so would Monterey as the Plainsmen hold out to take down the Cougars with a final score of 51-44.
Cooper is now 0-1 in District 4-5A play.
