More Than Just Football for Sweetwater

The Sweetwater Mustangs are a powerhouse making playoff runs and this season should be no different.

The Mustangs are picked first in their district and sixth in the state. At the beginning of their first practice Head Coach Shane Mobley addressed the team in prayer and with a speech congratulating the seniors and getting the guys pumped. One thing Mobley made clear though, that there's more to it than just football.

"It's 100% about winning the state championship for a lot of people," Mobley said. "We talk to the boys about, there's more to the game than just that state championship. The brotherhood that you build, the bonding. The first thing I told them was, seniors, congratulations. Because this is your first last two-a-days as a Sweetwater Mustang."

Mobley addressed it and the seniors feel it, they're ready to take in every second of their senior season.

"It kind of hurts, has a place in your heart that hurts and just makes you want to push harder and just go achieve everything you can," Tate Rainey said

It's not all about football for the Sweetwater Mustangs, it's also about the team bond. Yet they've created a culture here of going to the playoffs and making post season runs, so people have become accustomed to that. Yet coach Mobley says they're not going to let that kind of pressure get to them.

"The only pressure that we need to have is what we have upon ourselves. There's a daily distraction every single day, so the winning and losing, we're going to let that take care of itself," Mobley said. "We're going to take care of our brotherhood, our family."

They don't want pressure, but the guys are aware they have a target on their backs.

"Really we just got to work harder because now littler teams, other teams want to knock us down," Keevin Houston said.

Riley said, "We look forward to big things, and we grind for big things."

Sweetwater returns five guys on offense and six on defense. They are a strong team, and are ready to take on the 2016 season.

The BCH Sports quick hits for the Sweetwater Mustangs: Quarterback Chris Thompson is back to lead the offense for the Mustangs. All-state defensive back Michael Green returns after picking off seven passes last season.

Sweetwater opens the new season at the Mustang Bowl against Wichita Falls.
