ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons Director of Athletics John Neese has tabbed Zack Leggett as the new head coach of the HSU Track and Field and Cross Country Programs, replacing the recently retired Rodney Smith.
"We are excited to have Zack on board and we think he will bring great energy to our program," said Neese. "He will build on the success that Coach Smith had over the last eight years with our program. He has proven to be a great recruiter and we expect he will continue that at HSU."
Leggett comes to the Cowboys from crosstown McMurry, where he served as the head cross country coach and as an assistant to the track and field program for the past 18 months. Prior to that he was the head cross country and track coach at Clarendon College. He had been an assistant coach at McMurry prior to his time at Clarendon.
"I am excited to take over a program that Coach Smith has built," said Leggett. "They are coming off a conference championship and have a lot of talented individuals in the program, so it is not like we have to build from scratch. I want to build on where he left off and I am excited about this opportunity."
Leggett earned his bachelor's degree in business from Texas Tech University in 2008 and he earned his master's degree in kinesiology, sports and recreation management from Hardin-Simmons in 2012.
He holds a USA Track and Field Level 1 coaching certification and is a US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Endurance Specialist and also a Sprint, Hurdles and Jumps Specialist. He is also a certified personal trainer by the National Association of Sports Medicine.
Leggett lives in Abilene with his wife Andrea and his two children Jackson (6) and Laura (4).
