ABILENE - Stephen F. Austin scored eight runs in the eighth inning Friday night to turn a close game into a blowout as the Lumberjacks opened a three-game Southland Conference baseball series against ACU with an 11-2 win at Crutcher Scott Field.

The Wildcats are now 13-26 overall and 5-14 in the Southland Conference, while the 'Jacks improve to 21-21 and 9-13. The second game of the series is set for a 2 p.m. start Saturday, while the series finale will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.

SFA got two runs in the top of the first before ACU cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third when Heath Beasley drove in Russell Crippen with a single to center field to make it a 2-1 game. The 'Jacks got the run back in the top of the fifth, and the game stayed there through the next two innings. Garrett deMeyere went six innings on the mound for ACU, but was tagged with the loss as he gave up just three runs.

Brandon Lambright pitched a solid seventh inning, but after giving up a double and bunt single to lead off the eighth inning, he was pulled in favor of Drew Hanson. After a sacrifice fly scored a run, Zach Michener doubled in a run before Matthew Dickey drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk.

Braxton Wilks then replaced Hanson and he immediately got a ground ball from Tyler Kendrick, who shot a hard ground ball at freshman shortstop Mark Pearson with the ACU infield playing in to cut off the run. Pearson, however, double-clutched the throw and everyone was safe and a run had scored. After a sacrifice fly by Nick Ramos, Kyle Thornell delivered the final blow with a three-run home run to right-centerfield to make it an 11-1 game.

ACU got a run in the eighth after a Derek Scott triple and an RBI single by Alex Copeland. ACU's senior catcher was 3 for 4 with one RBI, while Beasley was 2 for 3 with one RBI.
