    Cowboys Fall To UMHB in Belton

    BELTON, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team still hasn't won a game against Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton as the Cru snuck away with an 80-79 win as Caleb Spoon's 3-pointer at the buzzer went in and came back out in American Southwest Conference action on Saturday.



    UMHB jumped to an early 15-6 lead but the Cowboys came right back and tied took a 24-21 lead with 9:53 to play in the first half. The first half featured four ties and five lead changes and the Cowboys led 41-38 at halftime.



    HSU pushed the lead to 53-45 with 15:41 to play on a Spoon 3-pointer. The Cru then went on a 10-1 run to tie the game at 54 and it was close the rest of the way.



    There were six ties and 11 lead changes in the second half. Demarius Cress hit a pair of free throws and then a layup on the next possession to give UMHB a 78-75 lead with 1:46 to play. Christian O'Neal hit a pair of free throws with 1:17 to play.



    Hammond gave the Cru an 80-77 lead with :46 to play and Dixon came right back with a layup to make it 80-79 with :36 to play. UMHB ran down the clock and Hammond missed a jumper and Dixon grabbed the rebound with :05 to play. With no timeouts he pushed it to Spoon in the right corner and the shot went in and out. Spoon hit seven 3-pointers in the contest.



    Dashun Dixon led the Cowboys with 24 points and Spoon added 23. Justin Jones had 10 points, five blocked shots, five assists and four rebounds. Nathaniel Jack had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.



    Braden Hammond led the Cru with 25 points and Demarius Cress added 18. Russell Green had 17 points before fouling out.



    The Cowboys finished the regular season with a record of 15-10 on the year and 8-6 in ASC play. They finished tied with Concordia for second in the ASC West and will be the No. 3 seed from the West based on tiebreakers.



    HSU will play Texas-Dallas in the first round of the ASC Tournament next weekend in Alpine. The Cowboys will play the 5 p.m. game on Thursday.



    The Cru finished the regular season 10-15 overall and 5-9 in conference play. The win kept the season alive as the Cru had the tiebreaker advantage of Howard Payne as the two teams tied for the fourth spot in the ASC West.
