Pitchers Null and Turner go the distance for ACU Softball at LA Tech

RUSTON, La. - Redshirt sophomore Hannah Null twirled a complete-game, two-hitter against Mississippi Valley State in a 7-0 win Saturday morning, and then Texas State's Randi Rupp pitched a similar gem, leading the Bobcats to a 2-0 victory this afternoon against freshman Allison Turner and the Wildcats at the Louisiana Tech Invitational.

With another doubleheader split under their belts, the Wildcats move to 2-7 entering next weekend's tournament at Texas, where they'll twice face the Longhorns in addition to teams from Illinois, Tulsa and Weber State.

    Game 1 | ACU 7, Mississippi Valley State 0

Hannah Null struck out nine Mississippi Valley state Devilettes in seven innings of work to earn her first victory of the season.

The redshirt sophomore from Highland Village, Texas, was perfect through 5.2 innings before surrendering an infield single to second base. She gave up a second hit to right field in the seventh with one out, but then finished the game with consecutive ground outs - and at only 74 pitches.

Devilette starter Rebekah Clinton was hurt by five fielding errors in addition to allowing four walks and six hits, one of which was a towering two-run home run to left field by third baseman Holly Neese - her first of the year that put ACU ahead 6-0 in the third.

The Wildcats scored four times on three hits, two walks and three errors in the second inning. Senior Demi McNulty drove in two runs on a single up the middle and scored two batters later on a fielding error by the second baseman. Donelle Johnson also scored that inning for her team-leading seventh run of the season.

McNulty scored another unearned run in the fourth, coming home on a passed ball with the bases loaded.

    Game 2 | Texas State 2, ACU 0

Freshman left-handed pitcher Allison Turner had a tough first inning against Texas State, but that's all Randi Rupp and the Bobcats needed in completing a 3-0 series sweep of ACU.

Turner allowed the first four batters of the game to reach base with leadoff hitter Kelli Baker scoring on a bases-loaded walk and No. 2 hitter Bianca Prado scrambling in off a wild pitch with Kimberlin Naivar at the plate.

Turner went on to strikeout Naivar for one of her five punchouts and allowed just three more hits - all singles - for the rest of the game.

The Bobcats threatened to score insurance runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Turner's defense closed the inning on a 9-6 double play, and in the fourth she got a ground ball to short and a pop up to second with two on and one out.

Rupp countered Turner's effort with nine strikeouts and had a no-hitter going until the third inning, where McNulty slapped a single back up the middle. Junior Taylor Brown was the only other baserunner for ACU, reaching on a passed ball in the first inning and singling with one out in the sixth.

Brown went on to steal second base for her third theft of the season.
