Logan battles back for OT win over Palo Alto

Down 13 late in the third quarter Saturday, the James Logan-Union City boys basketball team drew from its long- and short-term memory.

The result was a 65-61 overtime victory over Palo Alto at Santa Clara University for the Northern California Division 1 championship.

Logan (28-5) kept its composure, used its size advantage and made tough shots down the stretch to knock off the Vikings (26-5).

[...] Luster scored his first bucket on a dunk, Parilla followed with a three-pointer, and Conner drilled a mid-range jumper as Logan closed to 37-31 after three quarters.

The Colts took their first lead since the first quarter on a follow shot by Parilla, Palo Alto regained the lead on a layup by Max Dorward (17 points), and then Logan seemed to take command on a three-pointer by Parilla and three-point play from Luster (13 points).

Palo Alto showed its grit scoring seven of the last nine points of regulation, capped by a tough jumper in the lane by Jack Simison with 5.2 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

A jumper by Gabriel Hawkins opened the scoring in the extra period, and the Colts never trailed from there.

After four points from Logan Johnson gave St. Francis a 75-71 lead, Milstead responded with a three-point play before his basket with 55 seconds remaining gave the Mariners a lead they would not relinquish.

In Division 4, the visiting Bruins got off to a 17-2 first-quarter lead and never led by less than 10 the rest of the way as they won the first boys NorCal state basketball title in school history.

St. Pat’s (27-7) will play Southern California champion Helix-La Mesa (31-5) on Saturday in Sacramento for the state championship.
