Lincoln tops Mission for S.F. Section title

Besides paving the way for 220 rushing yards, he was in Mission’s backfield all game with 13 tackles, three for losses, two sacks and two punt blocks as Lincoln (8-5) turned around a 19-9 regular-season loss to the Bears, who were after their third straight championship.

A 13-yard touchdown run with 2:10 to play by senior quarterback Roel Marania (17 carries, 100 yards) all but sealed Lincoln’s 10th section championship and sixth under head coach Phil Ferrigno since 2005.

Josiah Calvo-Martinez (29 carries, 85 yards, two touchdowns) also had a big game for the Mustangs, who go on to CIF regional play next week.

On Mission’s second play from scrimmage, Phelps delivered a hard hit to the right shoulder of 2015 San Francisco Section Player of the Year Niamey Harris on an incomplete pass.

Harris said he felt some discomfort then, and two plays later, after he scrambled for a 23-yard touchdown to give Mission a 6-0 lead with 9:51 left in the first quarter, he felt severe pain.

The 6-2, 180-pound senior went to the trainer’s table in tears with a shoulder or collarbone injury.

Without their unquestioned leader and best player, Mission (8-5), winner of eight straight, still made a game of it behind tenacious defense and 72 yards rushing by Joseph Broussard, including a 32-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to cut Lincoln’s lead to 13-12.

A 2-yard punt led to Lincoln’s first TD, a 1-yard run by Calvo-Martinez capping an eight-play, 30-yard drive to make it 6-6 on the last play of the first quarter.

Mission’s Floyd Barrow returned the ensuing kickoff 71 yards for a touchdowns, but it was called back because of a holding penalty.
