Abilene vs. Odessa Permian @ Ratliff, 10/16/2015 @7:30

Mojo is rolling and their faithful think this could be the year they win that round three game and move on.

Others are saying nah, weak schedule, haven't played anyone of substance yet.

Will Abilene spoil the parade and bring Mojo back down to reality or will Mojo make a statement?

It's going to be close, but playing in Odessa, Abilene is already down 7-0 before the first snap

Neutral field: AHS by 10+. OP's home: AHS finds a way to win.

Eagles rushing offense last week gained more yards against SAC than all their non district opponents combined.

Eagle defense did allow a lot of "sexy" yardage against SAC. However, the only TD's were three big plays of over 30 yards each.

Eagle defense also forced three turnovers to include a very important fumble and recovering it for a TD run back.

Eagles got tested in game 1, game 4, and last week and are constantly both evolving and improving.

Eagle coaches showed that once again this year, like nearly many recent years, they know how to game plan, prepare, and adjust.

Eagle faithful also love "blackouts", which OP's fans are doing.

Dairy Queen Big Game Of The Week, as we know.

This is going to be a good game!

            ABILENE HIGH (5-1, 1-0) AT ODESSA PERMIAN (6-0, 1-0)

            7:30 p.m. Friday * Ratliff Stadium, Odessa * KZQQ 1560 AM/KKHR 106.3 FM

What’s riding on the game: The winner is guaranteed to at least be tied for first place in District 3-6A and will have an inside track on the district championship, which this season will guarantee a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Permian holds a 36-16-2 edge in the series, but AHS has won 12 of the last 14 meetings. The game has been selected as the DQ Big Game of the Week by Fox Sports Southwest and will be featured during the cable channel’s High School Scoreboard Live program at midnight.

Last year: Abilene High’s Derek Scott passed for three touchdowns, two to Reese Childress, and ran for a fourth as the Eagles won 30-13 at Shotwell Stadium. Abilene High running back Abram Smith suffered a season-ending knee injury on the ninth play of the game. It is the only time in 15 varsity games Smith has been held under 100 yards rushing. Miguel Espinoza led the AHS defense with seven total tackles, including 3½ sacks, and blocked a PAT. Permian, which was without its top three running backs because of injuries and suspensions, was held to 18 yards rushing. Panthers QB Heath Wood passed for 244 yards and two TDs.

Scouting the Panthers: With 19 returning starters, including all 11 on defense, Permian was the preseason pick to win the district title. The Panthers received votes totaling 10 points in latest Associated Press state poll. Permian averages 549.8 total yards (393.8 rushing, 156 passing) and 55 points per game. RB Brandon Bailey (115-929, 12 TDs rushing; 5-103, 2 TDs receiving) has been the focal point of the attack. QB Trey Potter (39-53-0—832, 13 TDs passing; 47-323, 3 TDs rushing) has been steady in his first year as a starter. WRs Jack Fawcett (11-191, 3 TDs), Dexter Neboh (9-210, 3 TDs) and Brother Miller (8-198, 3 TDs) head a deep receiving corps. The Panther defense allows 211.8 total yards (104.2 rushing, 107.6 passing) and 8.2 points per game. LB Joshua Nguyen leads the team with 55 tackles, followed by DB Jax Welch with 44. Nguyen also has a team-high four interceptions with one returned for a TD. Permian has not trailed this season. The Panthers have scored at least the first 21 points in every game and never led by less than 14 after that. The longest the Panthers have gone without scoring at the start of a game was last week against Midland Lee, when they scored on the first play of the second quarter. Permian has led for all but 34 minutes, 9 seconds out of 288 minutes played. In four games, Permian took the lead for good before five minutes had run off the clock.

Eagles update: Abilene High is coming off a 31-24 victory over San Angelo Central in its district opener. The Eagles have relied heavily on their rushing game, averaging 297 of their 437.3 total yards on the ground and scoring 24 of their 29 touchdowns via rush. While Smith (121-914, 15 TDs) and Immanuel Brown (68-483, 6 TDs) have gotten most of the carries, QB Peyton Killam had a career-high 114 yards last week. Killam (74-109-1—824, 4 TDs passing) became the fourth player in AHS history to record 100 yards rushing and passing in a game. The AHS defense allows 385.8 total yards (145.8 rushing, 240 passing) and 24.5 points per game. LB Ronnell Wilson (62 total tackles, 39 solo, 3 sacks) leads a defense that has 15 takeaways (4 fumbles, 11 interceptions). LB Hill Holloway (48 total tackles, 22 solo) is joined by DB Ray Velasquez (35 total tackles, 20 solo) and LB Blake Proctor in sharing the team lead with two interceptions.

What the Eagles need to do to win: Rise to the occasion. Again. After an emotional victory last week, the Eagles have to turn around for yet another big game, this time on the road. “We’ve got to jump out of one fire and get into the next fire,” AHS coach Del Van Cox said. “These guys are really good. We’re going to have to be better this week than we were last week. It’s tough, but we’ve got goals we want to achieve later on down the road that we need to keep working to get better at. Our season was not done last Friday night. We’ve still got things we need to accomplish.”

Sam Waller’s prediction: Abilene High 24, Odessa Permian 20

                Congrats to Mojo, 37-17.

Regardless of our thoughts about this or that, they came out and handed us a good ole boy country whoopin. Domination from both their offense and defensive lines. I mean their kids played every down with the intensity needed. Well coached for sure. In our backfield, disrupting our game, keeping us from getting into sync. Fast to the ball as well. Bailey is a pretty darn good back and can make you miss and pay for that miss, Outstanding young man as well, came and shook our hands after the game. Hope to see him playing on Saturdays next fall as he loves the game.

Mojo fans have every right to be excited about this team. Take it a week at a time and enjoy, you all deserve it.

That video board is enticing. Kind of like being at Cowboy stadium, hard to take your eyes off of it while the play is going on.

Again, congrats Mojo, good clean hard hitting game.
